On today’s edition of Shake, Ramble, and roll we are going to cover the basics of character creation. There are many factors to consider when creating a new character for a campaign, one shot, or even just for fun! Always check with your DM to see what level of background they want to incorporate into their campaign! We are going to talk about the mechanics of building a character today.
Starting from the beginning, the first choice you as a player need to make is your race! Each race has certain proficiencies that they start with, tool sets, skills, or weapons. They also have ability score improvements they get as a race. Knowing what your race is good at is the first step to a good synergy. For example. A Dragonborn gets a +2 to strength and +1 to charisma. Right off the bat, they make excellent fighters and barbarians. That isn’t to say they couldn’t be good Paladins or Warlocks however.
Next choice is your class. The class is what your character’s core function IS. Are they a skill monkey Rogue or Ranger? Do you go smash Fighter or Barbarian? Each class is good at something and 5e does a good job on making more classes fairly equal in overall power (RIP Ranger) but specialized in their own way. Subclasses further specialize your character’s class.
These are obviously just some examples, and in future editions of this blog I will use some of my own personal examples on character building! Until next time!
Shake is your everyday wrench thrower and general Rule of Cool Guru! If he isn’t writing the next edition for the blog, he is either making memes, playing video games, or wrenching up his DM’s machinations!
